FREEPORT TRADE UNION RECOGNITION ISSUE

The UHM and the GWU struggle trade union recognition within the Freeport Terminal before the Industrial Tribunal.

From the fact produced by the parties before the Tribunal, of the 710 workers employed,

UHM has 401 members  (according to the company records)

UHM has 601 members (according to UHM records)

GWU has 396 members (according to GWU records).

The Tribunal is to decide whether a verification process is necessary and how and by whom this is to be conducted. Decision is expected next week.

Min-naħa l-oħra, l-Avukat Ian Spiteri Bailey għall-UĦM tenna li din hija deċizjoni importanti li tista’ toħloq preċedent. Qal li l-UĦM ġabet prova dwar kemm għandha membri, xi ħaġa li skont hu mhix ikkontestata.

L-Avukat Spiteri Bailey qal li mhwiex tajjeb li l-industrija taffaċċja dawn it-tilwimiet. “Jekk se noqogħdu nagħmlu hekk, se nistiednu r-riċetta tal-falliment għall-industrija f’pajjiżna. Ir-rwol tat-Tribunal huwa li jagħti messaġġ lis-soċjetà, lill-avukati, lill-unions u lill-employers, biex ma nkunux frivoli u nippretendu proċess ta’ verifika meta ma tinġieb l-ebda prova tan-numri,” qal l-Avukat Spiteri Bailey. (extract from report by iNews – 30.04.2015)
